Registration in the morning. £78 for UKWA membership and amateur comp entry! This really put me off the idea of entering but Martin managed to talk me round.

We turned up at 11am expecting to be briefed straight away so we could go out sailing (was proper windy...). But turned out briefing wasn't to be until 1pm. So not enough time to make it worth going out sailing, 2 hours to be minced, could have gone out in the morning if we'd known, ARSE.

Anyway...eventually the briefing happened and we found out that the farmer's hands had been dressed with silver and the competition was to be at the Maze this afternoon woohoo! Pros only to be competing, but was just glad that we could be sailing at the beach with the best angle to the current wind/swell direction.

Arrived the Maze 2pm. Muchos muchos wind and waves, looked, well, epic...

Of course as soon as we started rigging up the wind dropped. Stuck up the 5.2, bagged out, on the Quatro. Wind was v light on the inside and some serious white-water was pushing in. But I made it out back 2nd attempt, only for my mast foot to slip in the track once out there, so had to come straight back in, feck...

That was to be my one and only excursion beyond the break. The wind became more and more iffy on the inside making getting through the white water a serious challenge. Numerous rinsings were endured...reminded me very much of Galicia last year. Of course the pros were making it look easy, and once out back they were catching some seriously good waves, down-the-line perfection in the slightly cross-off winds.

Changed to Martin's FSW84 at the end. Got caught by a particularly monstrous dumping 6-footer, couldn't keep hold of my kit, long swim back to the beach to find out that Martin's board had got dinged.

Bollox.

Long day, absolutely shattered by the end, after all that floundering in the white-water. Was dark by the time we had de-rigged and left the beach. Went back to our house for the week to meet up with the rest of the group, only for Storm to try desperately to turn us away because we looked like pro sailors who had mistaken this house for the one they were staying in next door! Cheers Storm very flattering!!!
